God’s Plans Trump

“For I know the plans that I have for you, declares the Lord, for they are plans for peace and not disaster, plans to give you a future filled with hope.” Jeremiah 29:11 (GOD’S WORD Translation)

The summer of ‘94 progressed and I became busy with work and side jobs but I thought of starting my own business in Welland, or go out west to B.C. (old friends from out west had just visited London). During this time, some friends of mine and I were planning a holiday south for Christmas and New Year’s.

One day, as I was reading in I Chronicles 4:39–40, I realized the Lord didn’t want me to go west but east. “Where east, Lord? Welland? Maritimes? Africa? How far east? (How thick is my skull?)

A good friend of mine, Brian, told me during the summer of his desire to go to Zambia. Wow! “What now, Lord? Do I go to Zambia? Show me your will”. And so I started thinking of Zambia more seriously.

During the same summer, I went up north camping for a weekend with friends of mine. On my way home after the weekend, dreading my job and feeling that I was grieving the Holy Spirit by being miserable there, I prayed that the Lord would show me his will. Hymn number 447 from the believer’s hymnbook came to my mind; “Teach me thy way, O Lord”. Out of nowhere, I wasn’t even thinking of it, came the word, like a still small voice, “Africa”. That same day, when I got home, there was a letter in my mailbox from Paul, the missionary in Zambia.

So, no matter what we plan, God’s plans are greater. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9 (KJV)
